Who are/were you closest to in your family and why?

My Mother. We shared a similar personality

Did you ever marry? Were you glad that you did? Why or why not?

Yes I did, and yes I am glad, because I love her very much and want to spend the rest of my life with her.

What was one of your most significant experiences you had with your spouse?

When my wife took me on a surprise visit to Switzerland to the Matterhorn, which I had been to when I was 17 (and climbed it) and loved it.

With whom did you have your closest relationship besides your spouse? Tell one memory about that person.

We love everybody equally.

2. Stephen and Nicola. The thing I enjoyed the most was watching them grow up and being proud of them.

Who do you like least in your family, and why?

My sister. As we grew older, she became very vindictive towards me and outright mean.

What did you love to do as a child?

I loved to camp, and overall Scouting.

What is your earliest childhood memory?

In 1953, dressing up as the Michelin tire man for a fancy dress parade.

What was your favourite toy as a child? Why?

A set of mini army cars. (tanks, etc.)

Did you play any sports, games or have hobbies as a teen?

I painted model aeroplanes.

In your estimation, did you have a good upbringing? Why or why not?

Yes. I think so because my parents had good values, and I had a lot of freedom.

Education/ Work

What was your profession?

Military. (Air Force)

How did you start in that profession? I was 15yrs old and I wanted more freedom, so I signed up at the recruitment centre for the Air Force.

What was your first job? Working at fun fair, driving the Big Dipper.

Did you enjoy working? Why or why not?

Yes, because I got to travel all over the world, and it was just an outright enjoyable job.

Hobbies/Activities

What were your five favourite activities as an adult?

What do you wish you could have been better at?

I wish I was better at golfing.

Smiling. So much so that in the Air Force I was nicknamed “Smiler”.

The size of my ears. They’re too big.

What is your most romantic memory?

The Perahera festival at Kandy, Sri Lanka, watching the decorated elephant parade.

Who was the first person you liked romantically? How did it turn out?

A girl in Sunday school, and it crashed and burned horribly.

What is the most romantic thing that you did for someone?

Taking my wife on a surprise holiday to Gambia. So much of a surprise, that she didn’t even know where we were going until we got on the plane!

What is the least romantic present you ever received?

Socks.

What is the most significant world event that affected your life and how did it affect your life? (e.g. war)

The Twin Towers. (9/11) I remember watching the towers fall that day on television, and after that, you could never travel so freely, that sense of safety on a plane was gone.

What is the most significant personal event that affected your life and how did it affect your life? (e.g. sickness, loss of a loved one, winning the lottery)

My fathers death.

Life Lessons

What do you wish you had known as a young adult?

I wish I had known more about finance and how to save my money. (Saving for retirement, etc.)

What is the best life advice you have for someone who is just beginning his/her life journey?

Enjoy every minute of it.

If you could change three things about your life, what would you change?

I wouldn’t change anything.

1. Having a conversation with The Queen.
